My marble and limestone cleaning and polishing process explained

With marble and limestone polishing and cleaning I will usually follow the process described here but it does change from job to job.

I will first undertake a chemical detergent strip to the tiles to remove ingrained dirt and old tile seals. During this stage I scrub all the grout lines and sometimes use steam cleaning to remove very deeply ingrained dirt deposits particularly for porous tiles such as limestone’s. This first stage lightens all the stone up allot and already makes it look much cleaner and fresher.

After this I will pay attention to all the chips and cracks and use colored stone resin to fill in all the missing bits. By filling the stone your tiles will all look consistent and there will be no holes left that would just trap dirt again.

After filling the stone I begin the grinding , honing and polishing your marble and limestone to condition the surface by flattening everything including the filler. This stage also removes light scratching , etching and some staining that may be sitting on the surface of the stone tiles.

Finally comes the sealing and buffing of the marble and limestone. I like to do a thorough proper job with sealing stone as I have seen the benefits of stone sealing first hand many times over the years. There are different types of sealers that can alter the color of the stone and we usually do tests on the job to see what works best for the customer.
