Ultimate quarry tile waxing and sealing guide

Why seal and wax your quarry tiles?

Quarry tiles are seen as a bit of a luxury antique type tile and waxing them really does give them that special look!

Quarry tiles can be very porous ( especially the old ones) and therefore it is very important to seal and protect them with tile sealers and waxes. Dirt and grime will eventually find it way into the tiles and so we need to create a barrier by finishing them with good clean sealing and waxing products.

There are a few different types of waxes and sealers used in the finishing process for quarry tiles. I will list a few below focusing on the ones that I use the most and how I apply them.

Deep sealing quarry tiles with impregnating tile sealer

Before finishing your tiles with your chosen wax you really cant go wrong with sealing your quarry tiles first with a standard impregnating tile sealer. These impregnating tile sealers are a clear liquid that goes deep into the structure of the material and seals it from within. They are breathable and durable. They are more durable than a wax and so contamination that does get through the wax will still have to go through the sealer before causing staining.

There are different types of these impregnating tile sealers. Some can color enhance an bring out the red in the quarry tile ,or there are others that dont change the tile color at all. You can decide which one you want but I always go for a color enhancer 🙂

Applying impregnating tile sealer to quarry tiles

This video below shows how to apply a color enhancing tile sealer and although he is applying it to slate its the same process for quarry tiles. The sealing product used in the video is not my preferred tile sealer though.

Ensure your floor is clean and dry, and then apply sealer to the tiles , buffing it in and spreading it as you go.
