Limestone polishing and refurbishment

Limestone is a lovely material to work with and always produces a satisfying result after restoration. Limestone is a calcium based sedimentary  stone and is very porous so although it is fairly easy to resurface and polish it is subject to staining and regular maintenance is important.

Marble polishing and refurbishment

Marble truly is a beautiful stone! Marble is a metamorphic rock that basically was limestone millions of years ago before all the heat and pressure in the earth transformed it into this stunning material. Although less porous and harder than limestone , marble is still calcium based and therefore severely impacted by acidic chemicals. You would be surprised how many liquids in the home are acidic! Proper maintenance and periodic sealing are essential to keep your marble at its best.

These limestone travertine floor tiles had not been touched for 20 years. I made use of steam cleaning (sparingly and with caution) to reach deeply ingrained dirt deposits and then polished the stone up to perfection. It looked like a completely different floor!

Deep cleaned and then polished

limestone in the process of being deep cleaned. Image shows half a tiled floor dirty and the other half clean. The difference between clean and dirty is huge.

Above we can see the deep cleaning process ( involving safe alkaline detergents) that lifts heavily ingrained dirt and grime out of the pours of the tiles. This is a good opportunity to detail scrub the grout lines and remove any dirt that is too deep for the resurfacing process to remove. This deep cleaning really works well on pitted limestone and Travertine that may have allot of holes in it.  The stone always lightens up and looks nice and fresh from the deep clean!

Polishing your stone tiles

Once all nice and clean we are able to recondition the surface of the tiles to either bring up a shine , crystallise or leave them more of a matt sheen if the client prefers. Stone polishing requires diamond pads with a wet process to cut slight layers off the stone to bring it up to higher smoother levels to create a shine. The stone is finally buffed to bring out a natural shine in the stone.  Deep scratches and etches will require a deeper cut on effected areas.
