My Victorian tile restoration service explained
Firstly this deep cleaning treatment used for Victorian antique tiles also works on quarry and terracotta tiles. They are all very similar in the way we clean and finish them.
Deep cleaning
I use allot of different chemicals, techniques, cleaning processes and tricks to get these tiles absolutely clean. Its not a quick process as one has to lazer in on every square inch multiple times to get them this clean.
Repairs
Depending on the type an quantity of tile repairs I may do these before cleaning. I can repair anything when it comes to these old floors but it all takes time. The old tiles need to be prepared before they can be relayed and new tiles need to be made up from larger squares purchased from Olde English reproduction Victorian tiles. We usually strike a balance between the customers budget and what is considered to be the worst damage. Once the worst bits are out the way we start focusing on less offensive bits until it gets to a happy point.
Sealing and Waxing
When we take all the old waxes and oils out that have been protecting the tiles we need to put good stuff back in! These tiles are very porous and will stain and be ruined if not protected after cleaning.
I will always return the morning after cleaning to seal the tiles with an impregnating color enhancing sealer. This will protect the tiles to a large degree from staining and then I can start repair work on them.
After all is bone dry and tiling repairs are completed we apply the final waxing. This can be a shiny finish or a mid sheen. We can even do a mat finish. There are different types of waxes that do different things, we need to discuss on the job to see what suits you the best.
