Why do concrete worktops get so damaged?
As more and more concrete worktop jobs come and go I have realised many customers are not given the correct advice at installation by the suppliers. Customers are not aware of proper sealing, PH Neutral cleaning and and general up keep. When I usually get to the job the concrete is largely unprotected and been damaged where seals have completely broken down ( as in pic above).
Concrete as a material may be durable on the whole but aesthetically, it stains, etches and is very porous so it sucks in oils that leave marks in it etc. It gets effected by anything acidic due to the calcium content in the mix. So you can think of it like limescale that makes up a portion of the concrete, so things that remove limescale eat into the concrete . Vinegar, Lemon juice, Viakal , acidic detergents etc
Over time enough acidic liquid thins the concrete out and we these nasty patches like the pic above, that are difficult to polish because they lack density. Crystalising and concrete densifiers can help with this. Natural waxes and topical type seals sometimes are also needed as penetrating tile sealers only go so far.
